The interior is impressive and surprisingly large. The Antipaors cave is one of the oldest caves in Greece. Despite being so close to Paros island, Antiparos is not so crowded but have a cosmopolitan character. A visit to the island that does not include touring Antiparos Cave can never be complete. One of the best things to do in Antiparos is visit its impressive cave. Antiparos Greece is located in the heart of the Aegean sea, right next to Paros island and belongs to the Cyclades island group. At the entrance, there is a small church dedicated to Agios Ioannis Spiliotis. It is easy to reach the cave either by car or riding the communal buss. ![]() Even though the German army, during WW II, destroyed part of the cave by breaking the speleothems, the beauty of it remains intact. It is a huge, eerie place with a wide range of amazing rock formations. A short drive from Chora, it is filled with incredible stalactites and stalagmites, some that are as much as 45 million years old. Antiparos Cave is the only vertical cave in all of Europe with a depth of approximately 85 meters with exquisite stalactites and stalagmites. The Cave is on the side of Agios Ioannis mountain in central Antiparos, 8 km south of Chora. For the service they used a stalagmite, called since then "the Altar". There, in 1673 on Christmas day, the French ambassador in Konstantinopolis, Marquee De Nouantel, accompanied by his numerous entourage, celebrated Mass, under the light of hundreds of candles. Later, it became a shelter for the Machedonian generals colluding against Alexander the Great. In the early 6th century, Archilohos, the lyric poet from Paros, visited the cave. With a sloping inclination, full of stalagmites and stalactites, it hosts many signatures of famous visitors. My deepest wish is for all attractions to stop with pamphlets/flyers and spend the money on preservation and more long lasting info plates where possible.In Antiparos island, 350 meters above sea level, stands the entrance of the historical Cave of Antiparos. The only reason I’m not giving a 5/5 is because of the lack of facilitation/availability for people with special needs and the minimal portion of permanently printed (info plates/steel )information. I am insanely shitscared of spiders, and I noticed some webs in the entrance, but trust me, you won’t see a single spider :) The reason why I mention Aracs/spiders, is due to the webcobs. The Cave of Antiparos or Oliarou is among the most beautiful and significant in the world this because, in addition to being an enchanting natural site worth. Learn about the Antiparos cave, the only vertical cave in Europe, with its natural beauty, history and signatures. Fear of heights,space or arachnophobia, should not limit your experience. So I would recommend this for all ages with somewhat healthy lungs. It’s an amazing cave, but bring some water and health ( reasonable health :) we saw people in their 60s, who crushed me in ascending). All in all, the stalactites and stalagmites are wonderful. One of the best things to do in Antiparos is visit its impressive cave. The lower/bottom, is only a small end/viewing area, towards some boulders from ancient slides. When you hit the “main bridge” towards a 1800’s graffiti area, you’ve seen the majority of the cave. We went all the way down (411ft) but it’s not necessary. Definitively a great site to visit when staying in Paros or Antiparos. There are minor “cave arches” while waking down, but they never exceed 1-2 meters, except in the initial entrance, which will take less than a minute to pass) We were only about 25-30 people down there, so it felt spacious (but call them in advance to hear about potential “cramped hours”). If you are afraid of heights, it won’t be an issue as long as you avoid looking down at certain areas (only two-three small passages might trigger something) But 99% of the time, you’ll be alright! It’s not dangerous at all, the concrete is armored and the fencing is as strong as it gets :) For those with claustrophobia I don’t struggle with this particular phobia, but I can try to give you a short description of what to expect the cave itself is very “open”, you will never find yourself in a contained space. ![]() I love geology and the mysteries of time, and this cave met my expectations!
